Comparison
Kite vs Obsidian
These tools solve different problems. Obsidian builds a interconnected knowledge base. Kite opens individual .md files instantly. Knowing which problem you have makes the choice obvious.
Choose Kite if…
- You read .md files generated by AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor)
- You want Quick Look to render Markdown in Finder
- You open .md files from various locations, not one vault
- You want a lightweight, instant-launch native app
- You don't need backlinks, graph view, or sync
Choose Obsidian if…
- You want to build a personal knowledge base with linked notes
- You need graph view, backlinks, and tags across all your notes
- You want a plugin ecosystem for extending functionality
- You sync notes across Mac, iPhone, and iPad
- You're building a second brain, not just reading files
Why Obsidian doesn't work for reading AI-generated files
Obsidian requires a vault — a designated folder that all your notes live inside. When Claude Code writes CLAUDE.md into your project directory, that file isn't in your Obsidian vault. To read it in Obsidian, you'd need to either move the file into your vault (breaking the AI tool's expected location) or open a new vault pointed at every project directory you work in.
Kite has no vault concept. It opens any .md file, from any location on disk, without setup. For reading files generated by AI tools, this is the right model.
